// Home / Project description

Third-party fund projects supported by the European Fishery Fund (EFF) of the European Union and the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Consumer Protection Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Project duration from 01.01.2009 to 31.12.2012
Coordinated by the Federal State Institute of Agriculture and Fishery MV
- Institute of Fishery -

Project title:

"Reefs in the Baltic Sea"

and

"Trial of an aquaculture project to produce the red alga Delesseria sanguinea at the reef Nienhagen and further investigations on the economic exploitation of the sulphated polysaccharides of this alga"

Motive:

The fishery resources of the Baltic Sea tend to decrease, despite of extensive management measures. This applies also for the Western part of the Baltic Sea and, thus, for the coastal region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The project "Artificial reef - Nienhagen" (2002 to 2008) searched for alternative opportunities to stabilize the resources for industrialized fishing in addition to the conventional management measures such as minimum length allowed to be landed, minimum mesh size, temporary fishing bans and temporarily closed areas. As a result, a large-scale artificial underwater habitat was created offshore Nienhagen as recruitment, growth and rest zone for occurring fish species. Scientific investigations on this reef proved an increase of the fishing value of this sea area. In addition, an opportunity to use the red alga Delesseria sanguinea economically was verified, thus, announcing an additional source of income for fishing companies. Based on the results of the predecessor project, a new orientation of the research project took place.

Aims:

  • Determination of the period codfishes spend in the artificial habitats as well as of the migration behaviour of possible local codfish resources
  • Determination of a possible improvement of the natural resettlement rate and fishery-related revaluation of spoil grounds and dumping spots by installing artificial habitats
  • Test of a pilot-scale experimental plant for breeding the red alga Delesseria sanguinea as sub-step between production facilities on laboratory scale and large-scale level.
  • Development of a marketable product based on Delesseria sanguinea and of an easily manageable control and analysis procedure for industrial production
